[ His question brings pause, because she had in fact noticed that she hadn’t seen him around as much recently… but he was also a grown man that did his own things. Yet one couldn’t be too careful here. ]
I don't know. I'm sure it's fine, but I can't get ahold of him.
[ He doesn't mention that he staked out Laurent's place. That he hasn't been home or answered his door in far too long. If she could see him, she might realize how upset he is. Then again, if she could, he'd probably be plastering a smile over it. ]
[ Except he wouldn’t be asking her if it was fine. She tries to call Laurent as well, but no answer even after a few tries. Things had calmed down in the underground for now, so there was really one other possibility… ]
[ Then that’s where she’ll head to as well, waiting for him right by the entrance.
He never did tell her what was going on between him and Laurent, but she wasn’t so ignorant as to not notice. The way he acted, the tumultuous emotions he tried to hide in his synch…
She was worried about Laurent as well, having kept an eye out in case she spotted him along the way. It was a twisting feeling in her gut whenever someone disappeared. It might be inevitable, but Alex always hoped to not lose anyone more. ]
[ That's... right where he expected her. So he schools his expression a block ahead of time, walking up to her with a relaxed, subdued smile. Natural, but not really appropriate when missing someone. His hands stay in his pockets, his tone of voice even. Normal. It's all fine. He's almost convinced himself of it by the time he greets her. ]
Hey, I didn't know you were coming over. Are you hungry? I would've picked us up something to cook. Or maybe some takeout.
[ His eyes can't meet hers for long before he looks towards his door. ]
[ Makoto was smart. Smarter than her. If she asks where he is, he knows she’ll be there. But as usual, he has that look on his face. The same mask he puts on when something isn’t right… and he doesn’t want her to know. ]
[ His smile wavers without falling when he shakes his head. But he manages to force the confirmation out of his mouth without sounding broken up about it. ]
No.
[ Then, his worry twists into anger that he doesn't let show in anything but his word choice. In fact, he sounds far too casual as he starts working on opening his door. ]
It's not like he's never disappeared before this place.
[ Disappeared on him specifically, the asshole. But even Makoto doesn't realize that's what he really means. ]
[ Alex doesn’t say anything else until Makoto gets the door open, watching him hide his emotions in the faintest of ways. How tiring must that be… and how bad will it be when they eventually come bursting out? ]
[ This is the uncomfortable part of having friends. For once, Makoto goes in first, hand trailing to keep the door open so she can follow. His jaw clenches, but he bites back the first overly defensive responses. Alex doesn't deserve it. ]
Why would it? There isn't anything we can do about it if he's really gone or doesn't want to be found.
[ It's easier to avoid that question when he isn't looking at her, when he shoves his shoes off a little too roughly. Makoto can guess what face she's making. ]

Not in the last week. Should we be worried?

Where are you?

I'm on my way home.
[ This way, it isn't lie. But he knows that's not really the answer either. ]

Nothing at Laurent’s place?
